Kia Oval - Surrey County Cricket Club Case Study: Turning steps into trees

Kia Oval - Surrey County Cricket Club ran a successful steps challenge through Climategames, engaging colleagues with movement and opening the door for conversations around sustainable actions.

“Climategames creates the perfect mix of physical activity and climate action, helping people to make a difference in a simple but effective way,” said Emily Iveson‑Pritchard, Head Of Sustainability at Kia Oval - Surrey County Cricket Club.

“Working with Martin at Climategames was brilliant and he was incredibly reactive to our comments and feedback, while also taking an active role in promoting the app to our internal staff.”

By the numbers:

  • 24.4million steps accrued
  • 640 trees planted
  • Over 38% of full time staff engaged

How did Surrey County Cricket Club run their event?

"We used Climategames as a Staff Engagement tool in preparation for our inaugural sustainability focused T20. We started our steps competition at the beginning of the T20 season on the day prior to the first T20. For this competition we chose 10 trees to be planted by each participant and the competition was open to the whole club with teams chosen in advance. We had over 38% of full-time staff involved over a month and a half, with 640 trees planted (and additional trees planted in practice run) and the final tally of 24.44 million steps announced on the big screen and over the PA system at the game. This initiative invited staff to think about the positive impact they were having through actions they may have been taking anyway and opened the door for more conversations regarding sustainable actions," explained Emily.

In addition to using Climategames as an engagement tool Kia Oval - Surrey County Cricket Club also used this app to plant trees as part of its match day activations, consolidating the company's climate impact.

Looking forwards

"We will be running more competitions of this kind at the request of members of staff who loved the ease of using the app as well as the feel-good factor," added Emily.
